ALTOPIANO DI PINÈ

What to do on the Altopiano di Pinè to discover the shy charm of our land.

Far from the routes of mass tourism, the Altopiano di Pinè amazes with its unspoiled and wild nature. Find out with us what to do on the Altopiano di Pinè during your vacation.

To get there, however, you don’t need to travel far. On the contrary, it takes very little, no more than half an hour from the Trento Nord freeway exit, taking the road from Valsugana up to Baselga, Bedollo, and Brusago, the villages that make up the Altopiano di Pinè.

Squeezed between Val di Cembra on its left and Valsugana on its right, this wide valley is the emblem of Trentino’s middle mountains. Located between 900 and 1100 meters above sea level, the Altopiano di Pinè welcomes visitors with a soft landscape of rolling hills and gentle slopes, along which lush forests alternate with lush green meadows on which cows and goats graze blissfully.

But don’t be fooled by its gentleness, the pristine and wild mountains of the Altopiano retain the rough but generous character of its inhabitants. To those who approach it with due respect it knows how to give charm and emotions that are hard to experience elsewhere. Read on if you want to find out what to do on the Altopiano di Pinè when you come on vacation to Trentino.

Clear as mirrors, the lakes of the Altopiano di Pinè.

Along the road that leads from Pergine to the Altopiano, you cannot fail to notice them. Lake Serraia first and Lake Piazze, a few kilometers further on, stand out in the landscape with their crystal-clear waters in which the panorama is reflected. With their presence they arouse wonder from the first encounter. Connected by a loop path along which to stroll pleasantly, in summer they welcome tourists and locals seeking relaxation on their banks or a refreshing dip in their waters.

In winter, on the other hand, their icy surfaces are much sought after by those who enjoy ice skating surrounded by nature. Those of Serraia and of the Piazze are not the only bodies of water that make up the Altopiano di Pinè. They are joined by other, smaller but equally fascinating ones: the Buse Lake, the small Rane lake, and the small Laghèstel pond.

Waterfalls, sanctuaries and strange pyramids.

Water is an important and precious element on the Altopiano di Pinè, and not only because of its beautiful lakes. Hidden in the woods at the end of a short walk downhill is the Cascata del Lupo (Wolf Waterfall). A mystical place, rich in spirituality, that is a good testimonial to the reserved nature of this area. With its thundering roar, it arouses in the visitor a sense of magic, bringing him closer to the mystery of creation and all its questions. The same questions that another important point of interest on the Altopiano di Pinè also raises: the ancient sanctuary of the Madonna di Pinè in Montagnaga. Fulcrum of the cult of Maria in Trentino, this large shrine is just one of the many churches that dot the Altopiano’s territory.

Joining it in beauty and interest are the Antica Pieve of S. Maria Assunta, the church dedicated to San Giuseppe on the Dosso di Vigo, and the ancient little church of S. Rocco a Miola. These small monuments testify to the devotion of the inhabitants of the altopiano who built them, decorated them and, even today, carefully care for them. Alongside them are other monuments, in whose genesis the will and hand of man played no role. We are talking about the Segonzano Pyramids, extraordinary wonders of geology that can be admired with a simple walk.

Walking and hiking: what to do on the Altopiano di Pinè in summer.

Walking and hiking, on foot or by bicycle, are undoubtedly two of the main activities that can be done on the Altopiano di Pinè in summer. The possibilities offered by the area are many and suitable for anyone’s level of preparation: from those who have never hiked in the mountains to the most prepared and experienced hikers. To get started, all you have to do is walk through the hotel doors and choose the trail that suits you best. There are some really easy ones that go through the woods and reach the many mountain huts in the area, where you can taste and buy typical local cheeses and cold cuts.

Among our favorites is the malga Stramaiolo, which can be reached by an evocative path overlooking the views of the Lagorai and the Dolomiti di Brenta. Or you can choose one of the hikes that ascend to the area’s many peaks, such as Monte Croce or Cima Costalta, two of the most challenging and satisfying climbs on the entire Altopiano di Pinè. The Altopiano di Pinè is also an ideal starting point for hiking and biking routes, both mountain and road biking.

Ice skating, skiing, snowshoeing and other things to do on the Altopiano di Pinè in winter

Ice skating is one of the most popular winter activities practiced on the Altopiano di Pinè and not only on the frozen surfaces of its beautiful lakes. In fact, in Baselga there is the famous Ice Rink Pinè, a large ice stadium consisting of an indoor rink 30 meters by 30 meters and an outdoor track 400 meters long, open from November to March. There is no shortage of ice here, and you can even rent skates if you haven’t brought them with you.
The Altopiano di Pinè also offers numerous opportunities for those who enjoy cross-country skiing. The Brusago loop, the Redebus Pass loop, and the Ice Rink loop are the three main trails for those who want to cross-country ski in the Plateau’s silent snow-covered forests, forests that also lend themselves to being explored with snowshoes on your feet.

A magical experience, to be lived alone or in a group, venturing on one of the many hikes that the area offers. From those accessible to anyone, such as the hike that leads to the Cròs del Cùc viewpoint, to those dedicated to the most prepared snowshoers, such as the beautiful and challenging one that from Valfloriana climbs to the Malga Sass and Monte Cogne. There are also hikes of intermediate difficulty, such as the one that runs around Ceramont, offering spectacular views of the Lagorai and the Dolomiti di Brenta.

Finally, the skiing. For those who love the thrill of downhill skiing, the Altopiano di Pinè offers the small and fun winter recreation center Winter Park Pradis-Ci, where you can ski and sled with friends. But if you prefer more challenging and heady slopes those in nearby Val di Fiemme await less than a half-hour’s drive away.
